What Motherhood Taught Me About Creativity

The Editor's Brew

Freshly brewed notes on writing, creativity, and the editor's desk.

November 12, 2025

Reader,

I was chatting with an author this week about our writing, and I mentioned how motherhood has given me a new perspective on . . . well, everything. Especially my creativity.

My creative process doesn't look the way it used to. Beyond the fact that I hadn't made space to write creatively in a long while, I've noticed that my creativity in general feels slower, softer, and more deliberate. It had to move aside for nap and feeding schedules, a tiny human who depended on me entirely, school routines, and everything in between. And when it finally did step back into the spotlight, it was messier, more grounded, and—surprisingly—a lot more forgiving.

Then this author said something that stopped me in my tracks:
"Having a child is a reintroduction to the world."

That hit deep. Because isn't creativity a kind of reintroduction too? Every story, every draft, every revision . . . Each one forces us to look closer, to re-meet the world (and ourselves) with fresh eyes.

So wherever you are this week—deep in a manuscript, juggling work and life, or just trying to refill your cup—remember this: your creativity is allowed to evolve with you. It's meant to.

Here's to reintroducing yourself to your stories, one scene at a time.

The Craft Corner

When you're revisiting a story after some time away, try reading it aloud—especially the opening pages. You'll quickly notice what still resonates and what feels like an echo of an older version of yourself. That's where your next revision begins.

Brew of the Month

This month's brew was a happy accident: a tiramisu latte I stumbled upon at a café that I instantly knew I had to try. And boy was I glad I did! It's indulgent, comforting, and just the right balance of bitter and sweet.

Interested in making it at home?
☕ double-shot espresso
☕ unsweetened cocoa powder
☕ sugar
☕ vanilla extract
☕ mascarpone topping: mascarpone cheese, heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, cocoa powder for dusting

Check out the full recipe here.
